Among the many games on display at Tokyo Game Show 2025, the presence of project from the country has always been a highlight for us. The PlayEatSleep team had the opportunity to visit the booth of Digital Happiness to try out their latest game, Broomstick Exorcist.

Selected as part of the Selected Indie 80 lineup, the game offers a unique and refreshing concept, different from the horror works we have come to know from the studio.

Digital Happiness' booth was the one that caught our attention in the indie area.

Impressions from the Broomstick Exorcist Demo

While playing the Broomstick Exorcist demo, we were immediately presented with the visual style that is its main attraction.

This game uses 2.5D visuals hand-drawn with a strong monochromatic color palette, giving it the feel of a dark illustration come to life. The color red is used effectively as an accent for the attack effect, creating a sharp visual contrast and subtly reinforcing the horror atmosphere.

The setting in this demo is a cemetery whose design is very typical of Indonesian cemeteries. This is a local touch that we appreciate, giving the world of Broomstick Exorcist a strong identity.

Overall, the visual presentation manages to set the stage for the supernatural adventure that players are about to embark on.

Broomstick Exorcist Early Gameplay

From our play session, Broomstick Exorcist is a game of beat 'em up with elements hack and slash. We take control of Vikka, an insomniac street sweeper, who exterminates ghosts in a cemetery with a broomstick.

This humorous-sounding concept was executed well. The combat system feels responsive, where we can launch combos against unique enemies inspired by Asian urban myths.

The mix of horror and comedy feels just right, especially the designs of the ghosts, which are both bizarre and intriguing.

Since this demo comes from an early development version (early stage), we feel that the combat system still has room to develop further. However, the foundation of the game already feels solid and has a lot of potential.

Promised Features for Full Version

Official information from the game's Steam page promises some interesting features. The game's official trailer showcases many of these features, giving a clearer picture of what we can expect from the final version.

One of the promised features is an upgradeable skill tree system. This feature will allow players to unlock new passive abilities and combo attacks, giving room for customization of Vikka's fighting style.

The most prominent feature revealed was the "Henshin" transformation mechanic. It is said that Vikka can channel the power of Qareen, her spiritual twin, to transform.

In this mode, his abilities will increase significantly, making him stronger and faster. This mechanic will likely be key to dealing with boss fights or precarious situations.

Initial Impressions and Future Potential

Our experience trying out Broomstick Exorcist at Tokyo Game Show 2025 left a very positive impression. Digital Happiness dared to step out of their comfort zone to create an action game with a strong visual identity and concept.

Although it's still in the early stages of development, the potential shown is already huge. We look forward to seeing how Digital Happiness will develop the combat system and other features until its official release. If you're interested, the game can already be added to our wishlist at Steam.
