Fans of classic horror games can get ready. Koei Tecmo and Team NINJA have just announced a remake project for one of their most iconic titles, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly. The game, which was first released in 2003, will be rebuilt from scratch for modern PCs and new generation consoles.
This news is certainly a breath of fresh air for old players who want to reminisce, as well as a chance for new players to experience the tension in Minakami village.

The Return of the Amakura Twins Story
For those of you who are not familiar, this game tells the story of two twin sisters, Mio and Mayu Amakura. While visiting their childhood playground, Mayu mysteriously follows an old red butterfly that leads her to a village that is missing from the map. The village turns out to be cursed and filled with curious spirits trapped in a gruesome ritual.
Mio, armed with her Camera Obscura, must find her brother and uncover the dark mystery behind the village before they both become the next victims. This emotional and gripping storyline will remain at the core of the remake.
Visual and Gameplay Updates
As a remake project, of course there are many updates prepared. Koei Tecmo ensures that the game will undergo a complete overhaul, from visual quality, audio, to a more modern control system.
The game's main mechanic, the use of Camera Obscura to fight ghosts, will also receive enhancements. The goal is to make exploration and combat sessions feel richer and more thrilling. The gameplay experience is promised to be fresh without losing the essence of horror that made the original game so beloved.

New Features in the Remake Version
In addition to technical improvements, the remake will also introduce a completely new gameplay mechanic, "Holding Hands with Mayu". This feature is designed to deepen the emotional connection between Mio and Mayu.
Through this mechanic, you can feel the strong bond between the twins as they face the horrors of Minakami village together. Small details like this are expected to provide a new, more touching layer of narrative for players.
Release Schedule and Platforms
According to the official announcement, FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is scheduled for release in early 2026. The game will be widely available across a variety of modern platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC via Steam, and Nintendo's upcoming console, Switch 2.
Through this wide platform reach, more players will have the opportunity to experience one of the masterpieces in the Japanese horror genre.
