After the success of BarotraumaFinnish game studio FakeFish is set to present a new project titled Frostrail. Different from their previous 2D underwater survival games, Frostrail carries the genre first-person shooter (FPS) cooperative set in a frozen post-apocalyptic world, with an atmosphere of dieselpunk and horror elements.
In FrostrailThe player is no longer in a submarine, but instead relies on a giant train called the Eden Engine. This train serves as a mobile base that is the only safe haven in a world of extreme temperatures. Players must keep the train running, as well as explore and survive with their team.
Eden Engines are not only a means of transportation, but can also be upgraded. Players can add new wagons for various purposes, such as workplaces, production facilities, and residences. These upgrades allow trains to run faster and carry more resources, while providing extra space to build survival infrastructure.
Environmental Challenges and Focus on Team Cooperation
One of the main challenges in Frostrail is a very cold temperature. Players need to stay close to the train to stay warm and avoid the risk of hypothermia. Exploration of areas away from the train requires careful planning, as running out of fuel or falling behind the train can be disastrous.
In addition to the weather, players must also face horrific creatures called Revenants. They are fast and deadly enemies that appear in open environments and city ruins. To survive, players need to work together, divide tasks, and utilize weapons and resources efficiently.
Different from Barotrauma which has a mode Traitors where players can betray each other, Frostrail emphasizes teamwork. There is no element of betrayal; the entire team must work together to keep the train running, find materials, and survive alien attacks and environmental threats.
Small mistakes like letting the fuel run out or failing to close the door can be fatal for the entire team. Therefore, coordination and communication between players is essential in this game.
Frostrail Release Schedule
Frostrail is scheduled to release on Steam in 2026. While an exact date has yet to be announced, the developers have already shared early footage and concept explanations that promise a tense new survival experience.
