Bandai Namco and Dokidoki Grooveworks officially announced Tales of Xillia Remastered for PS5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC (Steam), with a release date of October 31. This remastered version brings back the classic JRPG that was previously exclusive to PS3, now with improved quality of life and modern technical support.

Longtime fans can enjoy the dual story of Milla and Jude, while new players get easy access to one of the favorite entries in the Tales series.

Story and character summary

The world of Rieze Maxia sets the stage for the story of two protagonists: Jude Mathis, a medical student from the capital, and Milla Maxwell, a mysterious figure accompanied by four powerful spirits. The player chooses a point of view at the beginning of the journey, then witnesses the conflict triggered by a powerful device belonging to the kingdom of Rashugal that drains the world of its life essence. Milla and Jude's journey aims to stop the destruction and restore balance, delivering the character drama, world exploration, and human-spirit interactions that characterize the series.

Local combat and co-op system

The Dual Raid Linear Motion Battle System returns with a feel of fast-paced action and team coordination. Real-time battles encourage players to strategize, link combos, and utilize support skills to control the tempo. Local co-op for up to four players during battle remains available on all platforms, while story mode remains single-player. This feature makes it easy to couch co-op sessions with friends without having to sacrifice the main storyline.

Improved QoL and content

This remaster adds a number of relevant Quality-of-Life improvements: graphical enhancements, auto-save, toggle encounters to set up enemy encounters, early shop access, and other minor fixes that trim friction. The pack also includes most of the original release DLC such as costumes and utility items, noting that certain licensed content is not included. This approach provides added value for players who want to instantly enjoy the variety of cosmetics and light favors without the lengthy grind.

Technical details per platform

PS5 and Xbox Series target resolutions up to 4K with 60 fps, while Xbox Series S is said to run up to 1440p. Switch delivers 1080p in TV mode and 720p in handheld or tabletop with a target of 30 fps. PC supports up to 4K as well as a choice of 30/60/120 fps with a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect; other ratios will appear letterbox or pillar box.

Note that frame rate fluctuations are mentioned on all platforms, depending on the gameplay situation. Storage space requirements are around 16 GB on Switch and approximately 20 GB on PS5, Xbox, and PC. Save slots include Auto-Save, Quick Save, and dozens of normal slots. Extensive text language support is available, with English and Japanese voice over on all platforms.

This offering makes it easy to recommend platforms based on preference. Players who prioritize performance and 60 fps can lean towards PS5, Xbox Series, or PC. Players who want portability will suit the Switch despite the lower fps target.

The presence of toggle encounters and auto-save will help new players complete the two story paths without being overwhelmed by the rhythm of enemy encounters. This remaster ultimately unifies cross-platform access, polishes modern conveniences, and packages content so that it's ready to be re-enjoyed by fans and newcomers alike.
