Game Science has just announced a surprise in Gamescom 2025 in the form of a new CG trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, a new title after its success with Black Myth: Wukong. Based on info from Game Science itself, Black Myth is officially a series where ancient legends will be told and enjoyed by gamers.
However, Game Science clearly states that "Zhong Kui" itself is still at a very early stage, given that there is a project still in the works, namely the Black Myth DLC: Wukong, which has also been confirmed to be coming via the phrase "the westward journey won't end here“.
Who is Zhong Kui?
Quoted from National Geographic IndonesiaZhong Kui is portrayed as a ghost hunter who hunts down evil spirits in the world with god-like powers. Zhong Kui used to be an ordinary person with good knowledge and intelligence, but had a less beautiful face. When the time came for Zhong Kui to take the imperial civil service examination, Zhong Kui got the highest score and was worthy of a good position.

However, all that changed when the imperial officials felt that Zhong Kui's paras would bring shame to the kingdom, so Zhong Kui was removed from his position after a vote. This made Zhong Kui feel very disappointed, so he committed suicide and entered the hell realm. The king of the hell realm also saw Zhong Kui as the right person to hunt down evil spirits and calm the spirit realm, so Zhong Kui was resurrected and given power.
Why Zhong Kui?
Game Science has publicly stated that Zhong Kui was chosen as a sequel that will provide a different gaming experience. Looking at a glimpse of the character's story itself, we can certainly expect a wide variety of powers that gamers can exercise. For example, Zhong Kui can control the evil spirits he has captured, which means that the "minion" mechanic could be one of the main cores.

However, this is still early speculation, given that Game Science would need a huge amount of effort to replicate the success of Black Myth: Wukong to Black Myth: Zhong Kui. It's undeniable that Wukong's success is supported by a story that is ingrained not only in China itself, but also around the world. People have grown up with the story Journey to the WestIt's a game that makes even gamers to non-gamers to at least try playing.
Game Science certainly needs to provide a strong appeal in terms of story or game mechanics that can attract the attention of many people.
