Game Black Myth: Wukong, which is known for its modern visuals and gameplay-based Journey to the West, caught the world's attention this year. However, the Game Science team's high hopes of winning Game of the Year (GOTY) at the prestigious event was met with disappointment.
Quoted from PC Gamer, Game Science's CEO, Feng Ji, has publicly expressed his disappointment after Black Myth: Wukong failed to take home the top award. Through the platform WeiboFeng Ji wrote that despite the victory in the Best Action Game and Players Voice gives satisfaction, there is a sense of "lost" which is difficult to explain.
Not only Ji, the development team was reportedly quite devastated. One source mentioned that some team members couldn't even contain their emotions when they saw the winner announced.
Despite this, the support from the gamer community -especially from China- is clear. Black Myth: Wukong experienced a surge in positive reviews on Steam just a few days after the awards show. Many players have stated that this game is "Game of the Year the truth."
However, there was also a small controversy. Some negative reviews appeared on the game that won the GOTY, triggered by emotional reactions from backers Black Myth: Wukong. Even some gamers from China gave negative reviews on the Baldur's Gate III game on Steam because the 2024 GOTY announcement was mentioned by the CEO of Larian Studio, the developer behind Baldur's Gate III.
Some gamer communities outside of China even criticized Ji's "vent" and the actions of the Chinese gamer community who seemed not to accept the results of The Game Awards 2024.
More than just winning awards, Feng Ji sees his journey as a big step for the Chinese gaming industry. With more and more Chinese developers bringing quality on par with global standards, he is optimistic that this is just the beginning.
