Animated adaptation of game FromSoftware's legendary hit has finally made significant progress. The production studio confirmed the status of the SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT which is approaching its final stage.

This announcement is a positive signal for fans who have been waiting for the certainty of the broadcast schedule and the visual quality of the ambitious project.

Production Status of SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT Almost Completed

The latest information comes directly from Shun Fukudome, the studio head of Qzil.la. During the Aichi-Nagoya International Animation Film Festival (ANIAFF) event covered by Comic Natalie, Fukudome states that the production process anime this will be completed soon.

Although the format-whether it will be a TV series, OVA, or feature film-has not been officially confirmed, a release schedule has been set for 2026.

The anime is a collaboration between Qzil.la (pronounced ‘Kujira’) and ARCH, with Kadokawa and Crunchyroll acting as producers. Fukudome described the end result as “impressive” and having its own artistic acumen.

Official Synopsis of SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT and How it Differs from the Game

One interesting thing to note is the difference in narrative focus between the game version and the anime adaptation. While the game synopsis focuses more on the player's quest for revenge, the anime synopsis provides a deeper context to the political drama and history of the world.

The story is set in the Sengoku era, where Japan is split into many independent countries entangled in endless wars. At the center of the chaos lies Ashina, a sacred land that holds an ancient mystery.

Two decades after Sword Saint When Dr. Isshin Ashina seized the region through a brutal coup, a new threat emerged from within: The Interior Ministry. In desperation to protect his homeland, Isshin's grandson Genichiro turns to forbidden forces.

The only hope lies with the kidnapped boy-the Divine Heir (Divine Heir)-and his loyal protector: the shinobi known as Sekiro. This is the story of a young lord and his bodyguard on a quest to restore balance in a country on the edge.

Studio Clarifies AI Issue in SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT

This project had drawn sharp skepticism from fans. Doubts arose because studio Qzil.la openly stated on their website that they were utilizing advanced technology and AI to maximize production efficiency.

Plus, there is one frame in the first trailer which was considered odd by some viewers. This triggered the opinion that Generative AI used in the creation of the animation.

In response to such concerns, the production committee has issued a statement firm. While Qzil.la has a history of using such technology for efficiency, for this title in particular, the approach taken was very different.

The studio guarantees that this anime was produced entirely using 2D hand-drawn animation. They emphasize that there is no technology Generative AI used at any stage in order to preserve the artistic quality and original appeal of the source material.

Staff and Voiceover

The quality of this anime is backed by big names in the industry. Kenichi Kutsuna sits in the director's chair, accompanied by Takuya Sato as the scriptwriter. Kutsuna himself is known for his unique artistic approach, while Sato expressed his full trust in the director's vision.

For the sound department, the seiyuu of the games will return to portray their iconic characters. Daisuke Namikawa will voice Wolf (Sekiro), Kenjiro Tsuda as Genichiro Ashina, and Miyuki Sato as Kuro (Divine Heir).

With a solid lineup of staff and the promise of purely hand-drawn visuals, the development of this anime is worth following until its scheduled airing in 2026.
