Sony is rumored to be in the process of acquiring Kadokawa, the company that also houses Elden Ring game developer FromSoftware. According to Reuters, Sony's interest in acquiring Kadokawa is to expand their portfolio in entertainment. If both parties agree, then the acquisition could be completed in the next few weeks.

Kadokawa is a large Japanese media company that focuses on publishing, movies, anime, and games. Founded in 1945, Kadokawa is widely known for its various pop culture products, including manga, light novels, and various anime adaptations. Kadokawa also houses several game studios, one of which is FromSoftware, which has a myriad of achievements through games such as Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Sekiro, and Armored Core.

Sony itself is actually a 2% shareholder in Kadokawa. Many say Sony wants to take FromSoftware under its wing, so that games produced from the studio can be exclusively available on PlayStation in the future.

This is reasonable considering FromSoftware itself has made a lot of achievements. The Elden Ring game itself became the most popular game with total sales exceeding 25 million units, while its latest expansion, Shadow Of The Erdtree, has sold more than 5 million copies in just three days.

FromSoftware's games have not been absent from awards either, with Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice and Elden Ring winning Game of The Year awards in the year of their release. This year's Shadow Of The Erdtree expansion is also nominated for Game of The Year.

However, both Sony and Kadokawa have yet to make an official statement regarding the acquisition. Meanwhile, Kadokawa's shares have risen by 2% thanks to the news of the acquisition.
