Ascenders came up with an approach that immediately caught the eye as game expedition that makes climbing the centerpiece of the game. In Ascenders: Beyond the Peak, you lead a team of climbers to retrieve ancient artifacts from cursed peaks, while facing dangerous terrain, resource pressure, and mysterious threats hidden in the mountains.
This game was developed by Ludogram and published by Twin Sails Interactive. Ascenders: Beyond the Peak combines exploration roguelite, turn-based climbing, expedition management, and Lovecraftian-style horror.
The game will be available in Early Access format for PC via Steam in Q3 2026, followed by a full version for PC and console that has yet to be detailed.
Mission to the Top
Ascenders: Beyond the Peak brings a primary mission centered on retrieving ancient artifacts from a cursed mountain range. The team's goal is to not only reach the summit, but also return alive with the knowledge and artifacts needed for the next climb.
Threats don't just come from mountain trails and extreme weather. There are also mysterious creatures, phenomena and presences within the mountains. These H.P. Lovecraft-style horror elements became part of the world the team faced throughout the journey.
The official description also emphasizes that the artifacts found must not fall into the wrong hands. Therefore, the mission in Ascenders is not just about reaching the top, but also about bringing back something important that could affect the next journey.
Ascenders Gameplay Focuses on Tactical Climbing
In Ascenders, climbing is at the heart of the game through a turn-based climbing system. Each step needs to be calculated as the team's position, the shape of the path and the environmental conditions determine the options available each turn.
One of the main systems is rope mechanics. All team members are physically connected by ropes. Because of this, one character's movements can have a direct impact on other members. This system can be used to secure teammates, hold positions, or pull other members to safety.

Rope mechanics also carries great risk. One wrong move can turn a rescue attempt into a more dangerous situation. Under certain conditions, players could be forced to make permanent sacrifices to save the rest of the team.
Ascenders are also built with permanent consequences for each expedition. If a team member is lost, resources and morale will be affected. The remaining survivors will also carry the trauma into the next journey.
Character death is permanent. Retreats also have consequences. In some situations, the decision to save one person can close the chance of survival for other team members.
Announced Ascenders Features
Ascenders features nine different classes that have their own tools and functions.
The three classes that have been shown to date are:
- Highlander, which can push enemies off a cliff
- Scout, which uses a grappling hook for repositioning
- Sapper, which uses explosives to change the situation on the terrain.
This difference in ability makes team structure and class synergy an important part of every expedition.
The mountains in Ascenders aren't just a backdrop either. The environment is the main threat during the journey.
Some of the hazards already mentioned include:
- ice wall
- avalanche
- fragile cliff
- brambles
- unstable rockfalls
- poisonous vegetation
Each biome brings different pressures. The journey will pass through snowy areas to denser jungle territory. As the expedition progresses, the mountain conditions are also said to feel more unnatural.
Ascenders also features tactical levels that are short but intense. In this structure, the terrain is not just an obstacle, but can also be used as part of the strategy during the climb.
HQ, Artifact, and Faction in Ascenders
Ascenders don't stop at the climbing phase. Beyond the expedition, there is HQ progression and base camp management that help determine the team's readiness for the next trip.
Before embarking on an expedition, you can develop your HQ to unlock new rooms, technology, characters, and other long-term upgrades. After descending from the mountain, the team will return to base camp to recover from injuries, cook, repair gear, create tools, and strengthen relationships between members.
There are also night events and camp discussions that affect team morale and readiness. That way, the results of one expedition will continue to connect to the next phase of preparation.
Artifacts brought down from the mountain have different sizes, values and effects. They can be used during the climb, used to upgrade camps, or traded to certain factions.
The currently mentioned factions include:
- billionaire employer
- Belay Academy of Science
- Keepers of an Esoteric Order
The choice of faction, the mountain to climb next, and the decision to move forward or backward will affect your reputation, world state, and possible endings.
The Steam page also lists English and French language support for the interface and subtitles. Full audio is available in English.
