Atari, along with Nightdive Studios and Eidos Montreal, has officially announced *Thief: The Dark Project Remastered*, a revival of the 1998 classic game by Looking Glass Studios. Reportedly, the game is scheduled for release this winter on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is a modern version of one of the games that played a major role in shaping the stealth genre. This remaster was developed using Nightdive Studios’ KEX Engine and will include Thief: The Dark Project, along with additional missions, content, and updates from the 1999 re-release of Thief Gold.

“Thief didn’t just introduce stealth mechanics—it defined them,” said Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios. “With this remaster, we’ve preserved the tension and ingenuity of the original game while enhancing it for modern players, ensuring its legacy continues to influence how stealth games are played today.”

Patrice Baig, general manager of Eidos Montreal, also noted that few games have had as much of an impact as *Thief*. According to him, the game set a standard for immersion and atmospheric storytelling that still feels relevant today. This remaster is intended to allow a new generation to experience what made *Thief* so influential.

The Foundations of Pure Stealth Gameplay

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered

Thief: The Dark Project was first released in 1998 and is recognized as one of the early cornerstones of “pure stealth” gameplay. At a time when many first-person games focused on direct combat, Thief offered a different approach by encouraging players to move slowly, be cautious, and make use of their surroundings.

Instead of relying on open confrontation, players are encouraged to use light and sound to stay hidden or distract enemies. The game also allows for moments of violence when necessary, but always within the context of moving from the shadows.

In *Thief: The Dark Project Remastered*, players once again take on the role of Garrett, an orphan rescued from the streets by the Keepers, an ancient and secret order that maintains the balance of the world. Garrett is then trained to become a Master Thief, before eventually leaving the order as an adult.

A cynical man with a dark sense of humor, Garrett lives in a world rife with corruption and conspiracy. He steals from the rich for personal gain, but along the way, he begins to uncover the hidden agendas of those seeking power.

Features of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered features a number of key elements that preserve the original game’s identity while adapting it for modern players.

Advanced NPC AI

This game features a dynamic visibility system and sound simulation that allow both players and enemies to detect movement more realistically. NPCs can respond to sounds made by players, investigate, and even set off alarms.

Stay in the Shadows

Light and sound are the main mechanics of the game. Players can use fire arrows to extinguish torches, and moss arrows to muffle sounds on noisy surfaces.

Stealth-Based Combat

Players can attack from the shadows using Garrett’s blackjack to take down enemies from behind. In addition, gas mines and special arrows are available to take down enemies from a distance.

Misdirection

Flashbombs can be used to blind enemies and temporarily disorient them. Meanwhile, Noisemaker arrows can distract guards and lure them away.

Tools of a Master Thief

Garrett has a variety of specialized equipment, such as lockpicks, remote-controlled cameras, and even rope arrows, which can be used to access hard-to-reach locations.

Visual Improvements, UI, and Custom Campaign Support

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered

As part of the remastering process, Nightdive Studios updated and improved the quality of the game’s textures, models, cutscenes, and animations. The development team also updated the user interface by adding a weapon and item wheel and a mission selector.

For the PC version, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered It will also support custom campaigns. With this feature, players can enjoy a variety of missions and campaigns created by the fan community over the years.

The Legacy of Thief in the Stealth Genre

Thief: The Dark Project is known for its use of light and shadow, its emphasis on the player’s vulnerability, and its non-lethal gameplay style. This approach helped shape the design of stealth games for decades and inspired more immersive, system-based gameplay.

The original game also won the “Outstanding Achievement in Character or Story Development” award at the 3rd Annual Interactive Achievement Awards in 2000. Through *Thief: The Dark Project Remastered*, longtime fans can revisit the game, while new players have the opportunity to experience one of the titles that elevated stealth from a mere mechanic to a philosophy of gameplay.
