Sid Meier's Civilization series has become one of the most iconic turn-based strategy franchises in the history of the gaming industry. Now, 2K and Firaxis Games are ready to take the civilization-building experience to the next level with Sid Meier's Civilization VII VR, which is confirmed to be coming exclusively to Meta Quest 3 in spring 2025.

Through development handled by PlaySide Studios, the game promises to deliver a more immersive strategy experience through the technology of virtual reality (VR).

Up Close and Immersive

One of the main attractions of Civilization VII VR is how it puts players at the center of the world they are building. With an interactive game board-like interface, players can watch their civilization evolve live in a more lifelike virtual world.

This game offers two main modes: full VR mode and mixed reality mode. In full VR mode, players will be in a space fully inspired by the chosen civilization leader. Meanwhile, mixed reality mode allows players to stay connected to their real environment, but still enjoy the Civilization world in holographic form. That way, the game provides flexibility for players to enjoy turn-based strategies according to their preferences.

New Features: 'The Archives' and Online Multiplayer

Civilization VII VR brings an interesting feature called The Archives. This is a special space in the game that allows players to see a diorama of their civilization at various key moments throughout the game. This feature provides a new way to appreciate the achievement of building a civilization from nothing to a world power.

In addition to the solo play experience, the game also supports an online multiplayer mode with up to three other players. With this mode, players can compete in live turn-based strategy battles with friends or random opponents from around the world. The integration of VR in multiplayer can bring new nuances to diplomacy negotiations, trade agreements, and battles.

No Confirmation for Other Headsets

Although officially announced on Civ World SummitHowever, there is no certainty whether Civilization VII VR will be available on other headsets besides Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Given how Meta has been very active in the development of their VR ecosystem, it is likely that the game will be exclusive within the ecosystem Quest in quite a long time. However, there is potential for release on other devices in the future, especially if demand from the community is high.

One interesting thing, Meta's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, once expressed his interest in the Civilization series and even expressed interest in streaming this game on Twitch. This shows that Civilization VII VR has considerable appeal, even for tech industry figures.
