SEGA showed the opening cutscene STRANGER THAN HEAVEN during the TGS 2026 Special Opening Night livestream on YouTube on September 25, 2026. The livestream also showcased three of the five cities players can explore: Kokura, Kure, and Minami. In addition, SEGA shared the latest information about the game’s showbiz system.
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027. The livestream recording is still available for replay on YouTube.
In STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, exploration, dining, and entertainment are directly tied to character progression. How you spend your time in each era will affect the growth of Makoto Daito’s stats and skills—he’s the protagonist. Each era also takes place during a different season, so every major location has its own unique atmosphere.
The opening cutscene shows Makoto Daito in his youth
The opening cutscene shown by SEGA features a young Makoto Daito. This cutscene depicts the various events that led Daito to leave the United States and return to Japan. These events mark the starting point of the main story of STRANGER THAN HEAVEN.
Kokura 1915: A Steel City in the midst of Modernization
The first city was Kokura in Fukuoka in 1915. Kokura was a rapidly growing steel-producing city. Buildings with traditional tiled roofs stood side by side with smokestacks, locomotives, and streetcars.
The streets of Kokura are filled with ironworkers and residents wearing kimonos and Western-style clothing. The city has many shops, restaurants, and other amenities. You can also visit local homes, go fishing in the river, or tour the city by tram.
Kokura also offers the following traditional activities:
- Arm wrestling
- Menko, a traditional Japanese card game
- Beigoma, a traditional Japanese spinning top game

Kure 1929: A Port City with a Vibrant Entertainment Scene
The second city was Kure in Hiroshima in 1929. Kure is a naval port city built on winding slopes and canals. The shipbuilding industry and the presence of the navy have shaped the character of this city.
In addition to its industrial activities, Kure also has a thriving entertainment scene. Kure residents are increasingly wearing Western-style clothing. The influence of foreign cultures is clearly evident, especially in women’s fashion.

Some activities in Kokura, such as beigoma, are also available in Kure. The city has also added new activities, such as public bathhouses and tehonbiki.
Minami 1943: An Entertainment District During the War
The third city was Minami in Osaka in 1943. Minami was a bustling, modern entertainment district. However, the tensions of wartime Japan were still palpable in this district.
Shortages of goods and various strict restrictions shape the lives of Minami’s residents. Behind the brightly lit main street lie narrow alleys lined with dimly lit row houses, wooden shops, and black-market stalls. Here, you’ll encounter residents wearing wartime work clothes and children who work to support their families.

Minami is also where Daito rose to prominence as a showman. This district has a thriving music and theater scene.
The showbiz world is a constant presence throughout the story
After dreaming about it for a long time, Daito finally arrived in Japan. However, Japan did not turn out to be the home he had imagined. Instead, Daito faced discrimination and violence, as well as difficulties with a language and culture that were foreign to him.
That situation began to change when a character named Orpheus discovered Daito’s musical talent. Over time, Daito became more than just a performer; he evolved into a showman who discovered and nurtured new talent.
In the Showbiz game, you play the role of a showman. Your tasks include the following:
- Building an audience through advertising
- Preparing a song
- Recruiting performers
- Performing on stage
If you meet your sales targets, you’ll receive a generous reward. This showbiz system is featured throughout the story of STRANGER THAN HEAVEN. Each location offers different music, stage productions, and storylines.
You'll also mentor and produce more than 10 singers. Two of them are Keiko Shirai, played by Ado, and Suzie, played by Tori Kelly.
Creating Songs with Inspiration and Arrangements
To create your own songs, you’ll need to walk around the city to find Inspiration. In each era, Daito collaborates with different composers. When you share Inspiration with a composer, you’ll unlock new songs and musical arrangements.
This game also features "Arrangements." With this feature, you can change the instruments, keys, and even the musical style of the songs you create.
Once you’ve selected the singer, song, musicians, and stage effects—such as confetti or smoke—the show begins. During the performance, you can adjust the lighting and other stage effects at just the right moments. This is meant to boost the audience’s enthusiasm.
Daito and the performers will also evolve as the story unfolds. Each development in the story will bring about changes for them.

Difficulty options for new and veteran players
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN offers several difficulty levels, including Easy, Normal, and Hard. You can choose the difficulty level that best suits your playstyle.
For those of you who aren’t yet familiar with action games, there’s a special item called the RGG Special Suit. This item can boost Daito’s abilities. SEGA provides this item to players.
