Sugar Sugar Rune announced to be getting an adaptation anime latest. This information was officially released by Studio Khara to commemorate 20th anniversary serialization of the manga.
20th Anniversary Sugar Sugar Rune
Celebration 20th anniversary Sugar Sugar Rune announced on July 4th at the Japan Expo Paris in France. In the event, Studio Khara presented the production of a 3DCG animated short film with the official title of SUGAR SUGAR RUNE Les deux sorcières.
The short film was created as a prequel featuring the beginning of the friendship between the two main characters, Chocolat and Vanilla.
Story and Trailer
This short movie is set at the Kingdom Festival in the Wizarding World. Chocolat and Vanilla grew up in different backgrounds but have a strong friendship.
One day, Queen Candy summoned them and gave them orders to go to the Human World as candidates for the throne. The movie shows their journey through various tests before entering the Human World.
Production Staff
Prequel short movie Sugar Sugar Rune directed by Yusuke Matsui. The main producer for this short film is Kohei Fujiwara of Studio Khara. This project was produced by Studio Khara.
The voice cast for this short film includes:
- Miyu Kobashi as Chocolat Meilleure
- Tsukino Chikasada as Vanilla Mieux
- Tomoko Miyadera as Cauldron
Producer Kohei Fujiwara stated, "We hope that this project can showcase the new talent developing at Studio Khara." Director Yusuke Matsui also said, "With CG animation, the visual design has a unique charm. Please look forward to the final result."
The short film is planned to be shown exclusively at various celebratory events 20th anniversary.
A New Adaptation that Follows the Original Manga
Studio Khara also announced the production of a new anime adaptation that will tell the main story based on the manga Sugar Sugar Rune. This adaptation differs from the short film in that it will focus on the entire story of the original manga. Information regarding the broadcast schedule, adaptation format, and distribution platform have not yet been announced.
About Sugar Sugar Rune
Sugar Sugar Rune is a shojo manga by Moyoco Anno published from September 2003 to May 2007 in the magazine Nakayoshi. The story follows two young witches, Chocolat Meilleure and Vanilla Mieux, who compete to collect human hearts to determine who will be the next Queen of the Wizarding World.

The manga was later compiled into eight volumes by Kodansha. The first anime adaptation was produced by Studio Pierrot and aired 51 episodes on TV Tokyo from July 2005 to June 2006.
Sugar Sugar Rune won the 29th Kodansha Manga Award in the children's manga category.
