UNDERTALE clearly falls into the second category. Ten years after its initial release in 2015, this indie RPG by Toby Fox has finally gotten its own orchestral performance in Indonesia—and reportedly, local fans have embraced it wholeheartedly.
UNDERTALE: The Determination Symphony will stop in Jakarta on October 11, 2026, as part of its 2026/2027 world tour. The show is presented by 54 Entertainment in collaboration with the Singapore Street Festival, following previous performances in Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur. What surprised us a bit: the first batch of tickets for this Jakarta debut sold out shortly after going on sale. For an indie game originally created almost single-handedly by Toby Fox, this is no small feat.
More Than Just Nostalgia on Stage
The concept of the performance itself isn’t actually anything new—orchestras performing video game music have become a fairly common format in recent years. What sets each performance apart usually lies in the execution and how far they dare to go beyond simply “playing familiar songs.”.
In Jakarta, the stage will feature 25 musicians performing new arrangements of iconic UNDERTALE songs, complete with gameplay clips projected live during the show. The audience will be taken on a journey through locations that players who’ve played the game might know by heart: Ruins, Snowdin, Waterfall, Hotland, and even New Home. Key battle moments and emotional story segments will reportedly be brought to life through a combination of music and visuals, rather than just a context-free medley of songs.
There are two sessions offered: an evening performance and a newly added matinee—most likely due to high demand after the first batch sold out.
Why Is UNDERTALE Still Relevant in 2026?
That’s a pretty reasonable question to ask. A game that’s a decade old has usually passed its peak, but UNDERTALE has actually taken a rather unusual path: instead of fading away, the game set a record for the highest number of concurrent players on Steam in 2025. This means new players are still coming in—it’s not just nostalgia from longtime fans.
This phenomenon is also part of a larger context. According to data from PwC’s Global Entertainment & Media Outlook 2025–2029, Indonesia’s gaming and esports market generated revenue of approximately US$1.6 billion in 2024 and is projected to rise to US$2.4 billion by 2029. So when international promoters began eyeing Jakarta as one of their Asian tour stops—after Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur—it wasn’t a random decision, but rather a response to a market that is indeed continuing to grow.
Is It Worth It for Those Who’ve Never Played Before?
This is a question that might pop into the mind of someone who isn’t familiar with UNDERTALE at all. To be honest, music-based performances like this usually feel more special to those who already have an emotional connection to the game—that moment when a certain song starts playing and you immediately recall a specific scene from the game is something that’s hard to replicate if you’ve never played it.
But the orchestral format, combined with projected gameplay visuals, also opens the door for new audiences to simply enjoy the musical quality and storytelling—without needing to understand the details of the Underground’s lore. Simply put, this isn’t a show exclusively for die-hard fans.
