Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO has been officially announced as a new TV anime from Bandai Namco Filmworks. The anime is scheduled to air in 2027 and will be the first installment of the RG Project, a new multimedia project that introduces an original timeline for the Gundam franchise.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Marks the Start of the RG Project
The announcement of this anime was made at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. Bandai Namco Filmworks explained that the RG Project is a new-generation multimedia project based on an original setting created by Kenji Kamiyama.
Kamiyama serves as Director and Series Composer. He is known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. For worldbuilding, this project was developed in collaboration with science fiction author Toh EnJoe.
The RG Project will include anime, games, and other media set in the same shared universe. Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is the first entry to introduce this new timeline, which is not part of the Universal Century or the Common Era.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO Is Linked to GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT
This anime is set in the same universe as the action game GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. While they tell different stories, they are both part of an interconnected timeline.
The story of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO takes place about 100 years before the events of GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT. The game was previously announced at Summer Game Fest 2026.
With this format, the RG Project positions the anime and the game as two distinct entries within a single continuity. The anime serves as the starting point of that universe, while *GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT* will be set much later in the timeline.
Explores the Apocalypse Conflict
This anime story begins with the appearance of an Autonomous Interstellar Object from another galaxy. The object brought three major revelations to humanity: Gravity Control, FTL Communication, and Cognitive Materialization.
These three revelations ushered humanity into an era of prosperity and enabled expansion throughout the solar system. However, less than ten years after its discovery, the Object spiraled out of control and created an aggressive, self-sustaining ecosystem.
That unknown ecosystem came to be known as Apocalypse.
Humans fought against the Apocalypse for three months in Earth’s orbit. After that, humanity was forced to leave Earth and designated that year as A.A. 1, the first year After the Apocalypse.
In A.A. 45, children born on the Moon and in space colonies live without ever having known the world before the Apocalypse. On the Moon’s surface, a boy named Ray Azumi wakes up.
Ray is a war orphan who lost his parents in the Apocalypse attack. He was also designated as the pilot for the Gundam ZERO.

Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and Comments by Kenji Kamiyama
Kenji Kamiyama said that creating a Gundam in a new timeline led him to rethink the elements that shape Gundam’s identity. He questioned what would replace the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, the role of the Newtype concept, the existence of Minovsky particles, and the role of war in this story.
Kamiyama then returned to his enthusiasm for creating a Gundam from scratch. Through that process, the Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO began to take shape as a new Gundam within the original timeline.
Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO is scheduled to premiere in 2027. Additional details regarding the streaming platform and episode format have not yet been announced.
