CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION is now officially available digitally on Nintendo Switch 2. Interestingly, this launch on Nintendo Switch 2 comes shortly before the release of FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, the third and final installment of the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Series.
CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION serves as a prequel that reveals the origins of the series of events that would later shape the story of the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake trilogy.
A prequel story that serves as a bridge to REVELATION
CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION is a remastered version of CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII–, a game originally released for the PlayStation Portable in 2007. This game serves as a prequel to FINAL FANTASY VII, following the story of Zack Fair, a character closely tied to the backstory of Cloud Strife, the main character in Final Fantasy VII.
For those of you who have been following FINAL FANTASY VII Remake and FINAL FANTASY VII Rebirth, this game serves as a gateway to understanding the events that took place before Cloud and his friends embarked on their adventure against Shinra.
Improvements to the graphics and gameplay compared to the original version
CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION features “a complete HD graphical overhaul of the character models, UI, and backgrounds”—in other words, a comprehensive graphical update to the character models, UI, and backgrounds from the original version. This means you can relive Zack Fair’s story with visuals that are far more modern than those of the original PSP release.
In addition to the graphics, the game also features fully voiced dialogue in English and Japanese. On the gameplay side, the combat system has been updated to be more streamlined, with the option to trigger Limit Breaks and Summons directly during battle. This combination transforms the action-RPG—which previously felt somewhat basic—into one with a combat experience that more closely aligns with the standards of modern FINAL FANTASY VII games.

Available on many platforms; the digital version is released before the physical one
CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION isn’t actually a new game. The game was first released in December 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam. Its release on the Nintendo Switch 2 means the game is now available on nearly every major platform currently available.
For the Nintendo Switch 2 version, Square Enix has split the launch into two phases. The digital version has been available to play since September 10, 2026, while the physical version will follow on September 23, 2026. In other words, players who want to play it first can purchase it immediately through digital stores, while those who prefer a physical copy will need to wait a little longer.
Looking forward to the final chapter of FINAL FANTASY VII
Square Enix has not shared any additional details about FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION in this announcement, other than referring to it as the third and final installment in the FINAL FANTASY VII Remake Series. However, the release of CRISIS CORE –FINAL FANTASY VII– REUNION on new platforms such as the Nintendo Switch 2 shows that Square Enix continues to nurture the FINAL FANTASY VII IP as it approaches its final chapter.
For Nintendo Switch 2 owners who haven’t yet played through Zack Fair’s story, now is the perfect time to give it a try. The game is available for immediate digital download, and the physical version will be available in stores starting September 23, 2026, while we await further news about FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION.
