Fool Night has officially been announced that the series will receive an anime adaptation set to premiere on Netflix in 2026. The announcement was accompanied by a teaser trailer, the first visuals, the main staff, and the voice actors for the story’s two main characters.
This anime adaptation was produced by SUNRISE × SHAFT. The project was also announced as the first collaboration between the two studios. Set against a bleak futuristic backdrop, Fool Night tells a dystopian sci-fi story about humans surviving in a world facing an oxygen crisis.
Fool Night Centers on Transfloration and Toshiro's Life Choices
Story Fool Night Set in the future, when sunlight no longer reaches Earth. The sky is covered by thick clouds, plunging the planet into a perpetual winter and endless night. Most vegetation has withered, while humanity faces a severe oxygen shortage.
In that world, humans survive through a technology called Transfloration. This technology implants seeds into the bodies of people who are near death, then transforms them into plants. The plants resulting from this process are called Spiriflor, and their existence is a vital part of how society obtains oxygen.
The story centers on Toshiro Kamiya, a young man living in difficult economic circumstances. He works to pay his taxes, cover his daily expenses, and buy medication for his mother, who suffers from a mental illness. The ever-increasing pressures of life cause Toshiro to lose hope in his existence as a human being.
Toshiro then chose to become a Spiriflor. However, after undergoing the process, he gained the ability to hear the voices of plants. This ability led him to a job that connects people with their loved ones who have turned into plants.
Toshiro’s choice becomes the central conflict of the story. He is torn between two possibilities: continuing to live as a human in a harsh world, or leaving his suffering behind to begin a new life as a plant.

Fool Night is a Japanese seinen manga written and illustrated by Kasumi Yasuda. The manga began serialization in the magazine Big Comic Superior owned by Shogakukan in November 2020.
Until the announcement of this anime adaptation, Fool Night There are now twelve volumes. The manga is also available in English through VIZ Media in North America and Shogakukan Asia in Southeast Asia.
