KADOKAWA is now opening up a more targeted space for manga creators outside of Japan. As manga and anime reach more and more countries, KADOKAWA WORLD MANGA ATELIER (KWMA) has come up with a structure that connects submissions, editorial feedback, and contests in one interconnected flow. From the initial announcement, this initiative immediately attracted attention as the path was made neater and easier to follow.
The KWMA officially started on April 30, 2026. Via KADOKAWA official release, The company mentioned that KWMA is aimed at supporting manga creators outside of Japan, while encouraging the birth of new IPs that can thrive in the global market.
KADOKAWA World Manga Atelier Officially Opens
KADOKAWA built KWMA on three main sections. They are organized to connect the process of creating, receiving feedback from editors, and participating in challenges in a connected flow. Therefore, KWMA does not stop at open submission or contest, but moves as an initiative that has several entry points for creators.
This direction has also been apparent since the initial announcement. KADOKAWA has not only opened up access to submissions, but also set up follow-up stages after submissions. There are online channels that can be accessed at any time, direct reviews with editors, and an international contest with a wider format.
Basic information about KWMA is available via KADOKAWA WORLD MANGA ATELIER official website. From there, visitors can also go directly to the pages of each of the trails within the initiative.
Why KADOKAWA Opened KWMA
In its official announcement, KADOKAWA mentioned that manga and anime continue to grow globally. At the same time, the number of creators who want to make manga outside of Japan is also growing. However, opportunities to publish their work or receive direct feedback from professional editors are limited.
To demonstrate this interest, KADOKAWA brought data from their previous international contests. The Wordless World Manga Contest from 2024 to 2025 accepted 1,126 works from 104 countries and regions. This figure is used to show that there is a lot of interest from global creators, but it also shows the need for more open support channels.
KADOKAWA also noted that there were many voices from participants who wanted to debut in Japan and wanted support from editors. From this point, KWMA came up with a format that combines the opportunity to submit works, practical feedback, and challenges in a more structured system.
KADOKAWA Presents Three Lines Inside KWMA
To make the flow easier to follow, KADOKAWA divides KWMA into three main tracks. These three tracks run under the same initiative, with complementary roles from the submission stage to subsequent development opportunities.
Online Portfolio Review MOCHIKOMI

This is an online submission path that opens from April 30, 2026. KADOKAWA set up this channel so that creators can submit works at any time, without waiting for a specific event. This service is available in English, and is open to participants who can communicate in English or Japanese.
In terms of organization, MOCHIKOMI is the most flexible entry point. Creators from various countries can use this channel to send works directly to the editors. Official details are available at MOCHIKOMI Online Portfolio Review page.
OnSITE Portfolio Review

The second track comes in the form of an in-person review. KADOKAWA structured the OnSITE Portfolio Review as a face-to-face workshop, where editors from their overseas manga team would come on-site to review participants' portfolios and provide in-person editorial feedback.
The first OnSITE Portfolio Review session is scheduled to take place at Anime Expo 2026 in Los Angeles on July 2 to July 5, 2026, at the booth SH-2720. To join this session, participants need to make a reservation in advance through the official website. Registration is open from April 30 to June 25, 2026 with the system first come, first served, It will be closed when the slot is full.
KADOKAWA has also mentioned other regions such as Taiwan for future events. More information is available at OnSITE Portfolio Review page.
KADOKAWA WORLD MANGA CONTEST

The third track is an international contest that is an expansion of the Wordless World Manga Contest. While the previous format focused on works without dialog, the latest version now accepts works without dialog. wordless and works with dialog.
Supported languages were also expanded to five, namely Japanese, English, Spanish, French, and Traditional Chinese. This expansion makes the participation space wider for creators from various countries. The official details can be found at KADOKAWA WORLD MANGA CONTEST page.
KADOKAWA Opens Opportunity for Next Stage
An important part of KWMA is the stage after the works are judged. KADOKAWA mentions that participants who receive a positive evaluation from the editorial team may receive an associate editor. From there, support can continue towards the manga's debut in Japan and distribution to various countries.
This point shows that KWMA does not stop at the submission stage. Online channels, live reviews, and contests are placed as part of the flow that can lead creators to further editorial processes if their work is deemed to have potential.
The structure is also connected to overseas manga editorial team which was established in 2025. In the official release, the team is said to handle the nurturing of manga award winners as well as support for the development and expansion of works globally. The presence of this team provides additional context that the international path opened through KWMA is already supported by relevant editorial units.
KADOKAWA expands access for creators outside Japan
From its initial setup, KWMA shows how KADOKAWA has streamlined access for creators outside of Japan to their editorial system. There are online submissions open at any time, live reviews at international events, and contests with multilingual formats. These three channels do not stand alone, but are strung together in the same initiative.
With KWMA now up and running, the next focus will be on the works that come through this channel and how the process develops in the next stage. For now, KADOKAWA has opened up its pathway in a clearer form, and that makes the movement of this initiative worth following.
