Gameplay

SHINONOME ABYSS: The Maiden Exorcist places sound as an important part of the play strategy. Players can listen to sounds from the next room to recognize the type of mononoke before making a move.

Yono can also lure Mononoke with his voice to the trap area. Mononoke can be defeated not only with direct attacks, but also by utilizing traps such as Hearth or Punji Pit.

The structure of the room is also an important part of the strategy. One example is the Raijin Talisman, which can channel an electrical attack to all mononokes in a waterlogged room.

This official document also explains that not all mononokes must be fought directly. In some situations, players can avoid certain enemies or utilize their unique characteristics to gain an advantage.

One of the mononokes introduced is Raging Gaki, a large creature with long limbs. There is also a mononoke that seems to be trying to communicate with Yono without directly attacking him.

Under certain conditions, Yono can enter the “Yono of the Four Eyes” form. When this form is active, an Evil Eye appears on her forehead and strengthens Kodachi and other abilities.

The game is also designed so that players can continue playing even if they are not familiar with action games. The game director and game designer was Kenichi Iwao, the character designer was Tatsuya Yoshikawa, and the programmer was Hiroshi Ogino.

SHINONOME ABYSS Game Mode

SHINONOME ABYSS: The Maiden Exorcist has three main modes. There are a total of 53 mansions scattered in the game. The modes include:

  • HARAE is a story mode that follows Yono's journey as he carries out requests from the Grandmaster and searches for his brother. In this mode, the layout of the mansion, Mononoke's position, and items are fixed so that players can focus on puzzle-solving.
  • MISOGI is a traditional roguelike mode with small-scale randomized dungeons. Some dungeons can be completed in just a few minutes.
  • GYOU is a hardcore survival roguelike mode that features a tower or underground mansion with a high level of difficulty. This mode also features online rankings to see how far players can survive.

This mode split gives players the option to follow the story, play a shorter session, or try out a tougher survival challenge.
