Valve's new Steam Controller was an instant hit after it went on sale on May 4, 2026. The product was available through Steam for $99, but its initial stock was reportedly depleted only about 30 minutes after sales opened. This situation left many potential buyers having to contend with digital queues, transaction errors, and stock that appeared for a moment and then disappeared again.

Sales are Going Fast

According to the report Polygon, Steam Controller went on sale at around 1pm EDT. Shortly after that, a number of users reported problems when trying to complete the purchase. Some buyers received error messages due to the high volume of demand, while others managed to enter the payment page but failed to complete the transaction.

About 30 minutes after the sale started, the Steam Controller product page displayed an “out of stock” status. However, the stock was said to reappear irregularly. At some moments, the order button appeared to be active, but subsequent pages did not always load successfully. This suggests that the sales system may be handling failed orders, cancelations, or small incremental stock updates.

New Steam Controller Brings Steam Deck Feature

The new Steam Controller is Valve's second attempt at a dedicated controller for PC after the first model released in 2015. The new version brings a closer approach to the shape of modern gamepads, but retains Valve's signature identity through haptic trackpads.

This controller also adopts some of the ideas from the Steam Deck. One of the features discussed is Grip Sense, a touch-based gyro control method. The combination of a trackpad, gyro, and traditional gamepad shape makes this device aimed at PC gamers who want more flexible control in different types of games.

The high initial response is also due to Steam Deck's reputation. Many Steam users are already familiar with Valve's control approach, especially for PC games that aren't always designed entirely for standard controllers.

High Demand Triggers Checkout Problems

The short-lived stock-out demonstrates the strong demand for Valve's new hardware. The $99 price tag puts the Steam Controller in the premium controller class, but user enthusiasm remains high. This could be due to a combination of the Steam ecosystem, features that differ from common gamepads, and Valve's experience in making PC-based gaming devices.

The main problem was seen in the checkout process. Errors due to high purchase volume made some potential buyers miss the opportunity even though they were close to completing the transaction. This often happens when limited-stock technology products are released online, especially if many users try to buy at the same time.

Valve has also not provided an official schedule regarding the restock when this article was written. Therefore, prospective buyers can only monitor the official Steam Controller page to see if the stock is available again.

Restock Still Uncertain

Despite the out-of-stock status of the product, the opportunity to get a Steam Controller has not been completely closed. The stock that appears periodically indicates that there is still a possibility that units will be available again in small quantities. However, there is no certainty whether Valve will open a large restock in the near future.

For users who want to purchase, the most realistic step is to check the product page regularly and make sure the payment method is ready. Even so, purchases are still subject to stock availability and the stability of the Steam system.

This launch shows that there is a lot of interest in the new Steam Controller. If Valve is able to organize restocks more clearly, this product has the potential to become one of the most talked about PC controllers in 2026.
