Mysteries at the Back Palace and in the Capital
Maomao, a pharmacist from the entertainment district, now works as a servant in the rear palace. She becomes involved in the investigation of the Five Mysteries, a series of strange events that have been unsettling the palace. The investigation later expands to the capital following the emergence of similar events known as the Five Curses.
In the midst of the investigation, Maomao encountered a masked man who called himself “the emperor’s younger brother.” Rumors about this mysterious figure spread quickly among the capital’s residents. Jinshi, the supervisor of the inner palace, insisted that the man was not him.
Maomao's Supporting Characters
During his investigation, Maomao was assisted by several key characters.
Here are the characters who will accompany Maomao on her journey:
- Jinshi, an influential eunuch who oversaw the inner palace
- Guanyu, a traveling actor who is starting to make a name for himself in the capital
These two characters play a role in uncovering the masked man’s true identity.
Investigation and Deduction Phase
The gameplay in *The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother* is divided into two main phases. During the investigation phase, players explore the inner palace and the capital to gather clues and interview witnesses. Players can also collect ingredients outside the city to brew potions that serve as evidence.
During the deduction phase, players review the clues they’ve gathered to formulate a theory. Players must select the correct answers and evidence from Maomao’s notes to convince their opponents. The more information they gather, the more evidence they can use to solve the case.
Appearance at the Tokyo Game Show 2026
The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother will be featured in more detail during a live stream on the Koei Tecmo stage at the Tokyo Game Show 2026. The broadcast will feature voice actors Aoi Yuki as Maomao, Takeo Otsuka as Jinshi, and Yohei Azakami as Guanyu.
Platform and Release Schedule
"The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother" will be available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The game is scheduled for release in early 2027. The dialogue will feature Japanese voice acting with English subtitles.
