Rule of Rose became one of the most controversial PS2 games when it was released in Europe in late 2006. This survival horror game had strong psychological elements with a dark fairytale-like feel. The main controversy stemmed from the game's portrayal of children who were considered to be very intense, "without the filter of guilt or sin." They are depicted as exhibiting behaviors of cruelty, brutality, and manipulation that are often horrific.
