Square Enix seems to be getting serious about bringing its exclusive games to more platforms. According to Tech4Gamers, the latest information from one of the online forum users indicates that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will be available on Xbox in 2026.
In addition, there are also reports that a port of this game for Nintendo Switch 2 is in development. This news is quite interesting, considering the main series Final Fantasy is often associated with its exclusivity with PlayStation.
Square Enix opens up to other platforms
As one of the biggest RPG series in the gaming industry, Final Fantasy does have a long history with PlayStation. Since the PS1 era, the main games in the series have almost always been released first on Sony's console, often in exclusive status for quite a long time.
However, in recent years, Square Enix has started to show a different approach by releasing several titles Final Fantasy on other platforms, including PC.
The decision to bring Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to Xbox could be an indication that Square Enix wants to expand its audience. What's more, the release of Final Fantasy 16 for Xbox planned for spring 2024 also hints at a change in their game distribution strategy.
What does it mean for Xbox Players?
If this report is true, Xbox players will gain access to one of the biggest RPGs in the history of the gaming industry. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the second part of the remake trilogy Final Fantasy VII, which starts with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020. The game offers a major refresh of the 1997 classic with modern graphics, more dynamic gameplay and a deeper story expansion.
However, questions remain as to whether Final Fantasy VII Remake the first part will also be coming to Xbox before Rebirth release in 2026. Given that the game is still not available on Xbox to date, it's likely that Square Enix will bring it out first before releasing Rebirth.
Port to Nintendo Switch 2: A Challenge?
In addition to the news about Xbox, reports also surfaced that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is being prepared for the Nintendo Switch 2. This has led to a lot of speculation about how Square Enix will handle the port of this game to Nintendo's next console.
If true, then this could be a sign that the Switch 2 will have a significant increase in specifications compared to its predecessor, given that Rebirth is a game that is quite demanding in terms of graphics and performance.
The main challenge of course lies in how the game will be optimized to run well on portable devices. Will Square Enix rely on cloud gaming technology as they have done in previous games, or will they downgrade the graphics to ensure the game can run natively on Nintendo's new hardware.
No Official Confirmation
While this information is exciting, keep in mind that as of now Square Enix has not given official confirmation regarding the release of the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on Xbox or Nintendo Switch 2. All the information circulating is still limited to rumors from sources insider.
However, with more and more games Final Fantasy coming to multiple platforms, it's possible that this move will become a reality. If true, then gamers outside of the PlayStation ecosystem can finally enjoy one of the best RPGs ever.
