After years of fans being left to speculate, Bethesda Game Studios has finally speak up what they’re currently working on. In an official post on their website, the studio behind Skyrim and Fallout revealed a roadmap for the coming years, and it’s packed with details: from updates on The Elder Scrolls VI, new information about Fallout 5, to two remasters that fans have long been asking for.
We ourselves view this announcement as a form of “reassurance” for the community, especially since it came shortly after a wave of massive layoffs swept through several divisions and studios under Xbox. So it’s only natural that some people see this roadmap as serving to calm nerves amid this unpleasant situation.
The Elder Scrolls VI Remains the Main Focus
There are no major surprises here: most of the Bethesda Game Studios team is still fully focused on finishing The Elder Scrolls VI. The game is built on Creation Engine 3, a game engine they’ve been developing since Starfield’s release in 2023.
Interestingly, ZeniMax Online Studios, the team that has been handling *The Elder Scrolls Online*, will now be working more closely with Bethesda Game Studios on the entire *Elder Scrolls* franchise. This doesn’t mean ESO is being abandoned, as the team will continue to develop new content for the MMO, including follow-up updates after the recently launched “Return of the Thieves Guild” season.
There’s no release date yet, and it’s highly unlikely there will be one anytime soon. But at least it’s clear now that ES VI is this studio’s top priority.
Fallout 5 Officially Enters Pre-Production
This is what Fallout fans have likely been waiting for: Fallout 5 has been confirmed to be in pre-production and will use the Creation Engine 3. Unfortunately, since the majority of the studio’s resources are still focused on The Elder Scrolls VI, we think it’s reasonable to temper expectations for Fallout 5 for the next few years.
Even so, this news is still significant because Bethesda has never officially confirmed the existence of a Fallout 5 project—it has been limited to rumors and leaks.
Remastered Versions of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas Are in the Works
To bridge the long gap before the release of Fallout 5 or The Elder Scrolls VI, Bethesda has confirmed that remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are in the works. The approach will likely be similar to that taken with Oblivion Remastered, though no technical details or release schedule have been revealed yet.
Bethesda also confirmed rumors that had been circulating that Obsidian Entertainment, the studio that developed the original 2010 version of *Fallout: New Vegas*, is now working on a new *Fallout* project with them. It’s not yet clear whether this is a spin-off, a sequel, or something entirely different, but news of this collaboration is clearly one of the most anticipated announcements from this event.
Starfield Hasn't Been Abandoned
Amid all the buzz surrounding The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, it appears that Starfield will continue to be developed. Bethesda says its space game will receive new story content, gameplay improvements, and additional updates, with the plan to continue these updates through 2027.
We Still Have to Wait
This roadmap certainly sounds promising on paper, but we think it’s important to remain realistic. No release dates are mentioned here—neither for The Elder Scrolls VI, Fallout 5, nor the two Fallout remasters. All of them are still in development, and given Bethesda’s track record of lengthy game development cycles, we suggest not getting your hopes up too high in the near future.
Clearly, with Fallout 5 just entering pre-production and the studio’s main team still focused on The Elder Scrolls VI, these two remasters and Obsidian’s project are likely to serve as a “bridge” for fans over the next few years. This makes sense as a strategy, especially given the recent success of Oblivion Remastered and the resurgence in Fallout’s popularity thanks to its TV series adaptation.
