Netflix has announced the airing of the movie anime original titled Cosmic Princess Kaguya!. Project This is the feature-length film directing debut of Shingo Yamashita, known for his work on opening animation Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.
The movie offers a modern interpretation of one of Japan's oldest folktales, presented with contemporary visuals.

Story basis Cosmic Princess Kaguya! (Cho Kaguya-hime!) is taken from the ancient Japanese legend, “The Story of the Bamboo Cutter” (Taketori Monogatari). However, the movie adapts the story into an entirely different setting, a virtual world called Tsukuyomi. This approach aims to transform the classic legend to make it relevant for the current generation of viewers.
The film's narrative is presented in a live performance format that combines original music with animation. Rather than a simple retelling, the movie blends elements of fantasy, music and contemporary visual styles to create a new narrative experience.
The Creative Team Behind Cosmic Princess Kaguya!
The directing of the movie is handled by Shingo Yamashita, who previously received recognition for his work in the opening animation for series like Jujutsu Kaisen (Season 1), Chainsaw Man, and Urusei Yatsura (2022). His visual style that includes polished visuals, emotionally paced storytelling, and dynamic use of 3D cameras will be applied in this movie.
Animation production is a collaboration between Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) and Yamashita's private studio, Chromato Studio. Meanwhile, the character design was done by Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home).
Music by renowned producers from the Vocaloid scene
The musical aspect is an important component of the movie. The soundtrack will feature works from a number of prominent Vocaloid music producers. One of them is Ryo (supercell), the creator of Hatsune Miku's popular song “Melt”.
Also joined in project these are other producers such as kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. Their involvement reinforces director Shingo Yamashita's theme of modern internet culture.
