Nintendo has officially confirmed a new feature on the Nintendo Switch 2 that has caught the attention of many gamers, the "C" button. This button is not just an extra button, but the main gateway to access the GameChat service, which is a voice and video communication feature integrated directly into the system.
According to PolygonGameChat is designed as a voice and video chat service that allows players to interact in real-time while playing. This feature comes as a solution to criticism of the communication system in the previous generation Nintendo Switch, which relied on external apps on smartphones. With GameChat, everything can be done directly from the console without the need for additional devices.
However, GameChat is not free forever. Nintendo has specified that the service can only be used for free until March 31, 2026. After that period, players are required to subscribe Nintendo Switch Online (NSO) to continue enjoying access to GameChat. NSO's own subscription fee remains at the same figure, which is $19.99 per year (about Rp337,000 at the time of writing).

"C" Button Function on Nintendo Switch 2
The "C" button on the Nintendo Switch 2 serves as a shortcut to activate the GameChat service. But interestingly, if players don't have an NSO subscription after the free period ends, the button won't be usable for anything else. When pressed, the button will only open an explanation of GameChat and offer the option to subscribe to NSO. Nintendo explicitly states that this button cannot be re-purposed.reprogram for alternative functions such as menus or other shortcuts.
This decision drew mixed responses. Some players saw Nintendo's decision as somewhat limiting user flexibility, while others understood this strategy as a push to expand the number of NSO subscribers.
To support video communication, Nintendo also offers custom camera accessories which is sold separately for $49,99. The camera supports video calls as well as live gameplay sharing features, providing a deeper interactive experience - especially for players active in online communities or beginner streamers who want to get started without complicated enhancements.
Pricing and Potential Cost Increases
Nintendo Switch 2 itself is priced at $449,99 and games that can reach $90, more expensive than the previous generation. In addition to the new features embedded, the price is also influenced by the new import tariffs announced by the Trump administration, which could impact the price of electronics from certain countries. Nintendo admitted that it is considering further pricing strategies if the tariffs are actually imposed.
An NSO subscription doesn't just unlock GameChat access. Nintendo also promises exciting incentives such as access to the game catalog GameCube, as well as free graphics upgrades for some big titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. As such, NSO is now an important part of the Nintendo Switch 2 ecosystem.
