A while back, we reviewed this game and concluded that it’s one of the most exciting strategy games we’ve ever played, thanks to its complex gameplay mechanics that can still be learned step by step.

Total War: Warhammer III has already proven itself to be one of the most prolific Total War series when it comes to releasing additional content. This time, it’s Grand Cathay’s turn to receive a new DLC titled “Bhashiva – Character Pack,” which introduces a Legendary Lord named Bhashiva, the White Tiger, complete with a force of Tiger Warriors that brings a playstyle completely different from the Grand Cathay we’re used to.

While in the previous article Grand Cathay was synonymous with tight formations and the Dragon Lord crushing enemies with his storm breath, this DLC turns everything on its head. Bhashiva invites us to play as a lurking predator, not a defensive wall.

Bhashiva, the White Tiger of Shang-Yang

Before we continue, please note that this section discusses the backstory of Bhashiva and the Tiger Warriors in considerable detail. If you’d like to experience the in-game narrative for yourself, you might want to skip this section.

The Tiger Warriors are an ancient military tradition that predates their current presence in Grand Cathay by a very long time. According to their own legends, this people was created by the Old Ones and once inhabited the region now known as Ind. When Chaos swept across the world and the Old Ones vanished, the Tiger Warriors were nearly wiped out. They were saved by Kamau, their great chieftain, who succeeded in thwarting Tzeentch’s own schemes. It is Kamau’s courage that forms the foundation of the Tiger Warriors’ eternal hatred for Chaos, the Beastmen, and especially the servants of Tzeentch.

From there arose a prophecy about the coming of the White Tiger, who would lead their people to safety. The first White Tiger fulfilled this prophecy by uniting the scattered clans and leading them across the Mountains of Heaven. Some settled in the mountains, but many continued on to the western desert, the domain of the Iron Dragon. There, the White Tiger swore allegiance to the Iron Dragon—a bond that has been renewed by every White Tiger born since.

Bhashiva, the Desert Tigress, is the White Tiger currently holding that mandate. She is one of the Lords of Shang-Yang, but her primary loyalty remains with the White Tiger and Kamau’s legacy, not solely with Zhao Ming. Because of this, the Tiger Warriors hold a unique position in Grand Cathay; they fight alongside Cathay’s forces, guard caravans, and protect remote outposts, yet they maintain their own traditions and command structure through an institution known as the Tiger Court. Culturally, the Tiger Warriors are known as knights who uphold honor—a trait that puts them at odds with the Ogre race, whom they consider greedy and undisciplined.

Bashiva on the Battlefield in Total War: Warhammer III

In terms of battle style, Bhashiva is designed as a duelist whose role is to take down enemy infantry and characters at the right moment. He has high initial damage, so he relies heavily on aggressive play and precision rather than prolonged battles.

His two main abilities complement each other. Blades of Shang-Yang boosts his attack damage while inflicting a fire weakness status on enemies, which automatically enhances his already flaming attacks. Meanwhile, Heaven’s Gate grants him the ability to teleport and instantly change positions, dealing damage upon landing, then allowing him to choose between striking a vulnerable target or escaping a disadvantageous fight. This combination makes Bhashiva extremely versatile in the hands of the right player, but it also demands precise timing.

At the troop level, all Tiger Warriors units share the passive ability “Ferocious Ambush,” which increases their speed and grants a charge bonus, plus temporary immunity to flanking attacks. As a result, Tiger Warriors are ideally suited to serve as fast-moving shock troops supporting Cathay’s signature Jade Warriors formation.

On the campaign side, this DLC introduces the Tiger Court as Bhashiva’s main feature. By conquering key settlements, you collect Relics to donate to one of the Three Pillars: The Prophecy of the White Tiger, which focuses on cooperation and recruiting allies, The Teachings of Kamau, which enhances ambushes and territorial visibility, and The Way of the Thousand Gods, which accelerates troop mobilization and recruitment. Additionally, there’s the Armies of Shang-Yang system, where you collect Iron Favor from missions for Zhao Ming to unlock insignias that specialize Cathay units according to your formation needs.

The new roster is just as intriguing. The double-axe-wielding Tiger Warriors serve as the frontline anti-infantry unit, the Tiger Warrior Stalkers with throwing discs are ideal for disrupting and flanking, while the Iron Claw Tiger Warriors with guandao act as elite anti-large units and Bhashiva’s personal bodyguards. In addition, there’s the new Tiger Warrior Lord Sawai, who specializes in fighting large units, as well as the spellcaster Hero Clawspeaker, who can summon the Celestial Lion using the “Transformation of Kadon” ability.

The White Tiger's Weakness

Unfortunately, this aggressive playstyle comes with risks. Bhashiva remains a small single entity with about 5,248 health and a short melee range—a far cry from other Legendary Lords who ride dragons or large monsters to absorb damage. This means that if he gets trapped in a group fight without having a chance to use Heaven’s Gate to escape, he could go down faster than you’d expect.

His Dodge ability is also only effective against ordinary weapons and projectiles, but is far less effective against magic-infused weapons. This makes Bhashiva quite vulnerable against factions that rely heavily on casters or magic-wielding units, such as the High Elves or the Vampire Counts.

One more important note: Bhashiva himself focuses more on anti-infantry than anti-large units. When it comes to taking down monsters or large units, he relies on his roster—such as Sawai and the Iron Claw Tiger Warriors. Overall, the entire Tiger Warriors playstyle is built on a hit-and-run philosophy: if an ambush or initial charge fails, and your troops get dragged into a protracted battle, they can become overwhelmed because they aren’t designed to hold their ground like typical Cathay formations.
